Overview
The Karnak Temples Complex
Is one of the largest ancient religious sites, spanning 247 acres. Construction began during the reign of Senusret I (2000–1700 BC) and continued through the Ptolemaic period (305–30 BC). It includes the Karnak Open Air Museum and the Precinct of Amun-Re, the primary deity of Thebes (Luxor). Over 1500 years, successive pharaohs contributed to this vast collection of temples, sanctuaries, pylons, and monuments.
Luxor Temple,
One of Egypt’s most iconic structures, was dedicated to the Theban Triad: Amun, Mut, and Khonsu. Built during Amenhotep III’s reign (1390–1352 BCE) and expanded by Ramses II, the temple evolved through Greek, Roman, Christian, and Islamic periods. It played a significant role in the Opet Festival, celebrating fertility and the pharaoh's re-coronation.
